Colour and space At the equipment of residental rooms, colours play a decisive role. Intrusive and powerful colours optically narrow the room, by contrast quiet and unassuming colours give sense of spaciousness. Cool colours (blue, white and some shades of green, purple ...) are unobtrusive, so that for "spreading the room" we decide for them rather than for warm colours (red, yellow, orange, brown ...). Dark colours work as hard, so they can press us, while the bright colours are light and lift us. Heavy colours are those containing some black or red. Since the colours touch us, it is important that we take those colours for a residental room that flatter us, warm us up instead cooling us. Certain colours may look brighter against a dark background, in comparison to light background. Choice of colour is certainly dependent on the atmosphere that we want to create in a space. How to optically increase / decrease the room? With a colour and different light you can create a special atmosphere in the room. You can emphasize or hide the actual size of the room. For example, a long hallway we "cut" , a narrow room we "expand", etc.. The choice of warm colours apparently reduces the actual room size and brings together elements in a room, whereas cold colours apparently increase the room and feature them far away. 1. How to optically increase a small and dark room? This can be done in several ways: with a white ceiling, which leaves us the impression of space, with cold very bright colour shades, such as light blue, light green, light yellow colour, etc.., with monochrome panels or small patterns on the walls, with mirrors we can expand room and give new dimensions to the room; we remove doors between rooms if they are not necessary; wooden panellings on walls also decrease room, therefore we remove them; wall papers with large and dark patterns are also disturbing, therefore we remove them. Light colours in a room reflect more light, therefore we get a feeling that they are full of energy and optimism. 2. How to optically decrease a large room? A large space can be reduced by walls in warm, dark and strong colours. A long room we virtually cut so that we paint the most remote walls in a dark shade or a warm colour, which brings the walls optically near. We can equip walls in different colours (we combine complementary colours or use a harmonic colour scheme); with large patterns on the wall or wall papers or the combination of different materials and patterns. A carpet also decreases the room optically. If a ceiling is high, we paint it with dark warm colour, then the optical effect is larger. 3. How to decrease a long room? The most remote wall we paint in a dark colour shade or with warm colour, which optically brings the wall near. The longitudinal walls are in light (or in lighter) colours, also the furniture. On the bottom we can use transversal or netlike pattern (e.g. transversally laid parquet, tiles or other bottom claddings with pattern). 4. Short space may appear seemingly long. The space can be extended to the end wall in a very light color, or with a mirror mounted on it. Side walls are painted in a darker colour or we use a darker furniture. The space can be extended by longitudinal lines on the floor and / or on the ceiling. 5. How to make a high ceiling look lower? We can optically lower a high ceiling so that we paint it in a light warm colour, an even greater impact we achieve, if it is in dark warm colours. We optically lower the ceiling in such a way, that walls are painted to the ceiling, but we end lower – the upper zone is painted in the same colour as the ceiling, similar effect we achive by using stucco. Walls can be enriched with horizontal lines or the lower part of the wall liven up with the samples. For the floor darker colours and designs are more suitable. The mistake, which we often make in the room is that the ceiling and walls are in white colour (or in the same colour). 6. How to increase optically low ceiling? A low ceiling can be increased by using bright colors - especially cold, but the effect on the optical properties is even higher if the walls and ceiling are in the same light colour or if we use the vertical lines in space. The mirror on the ceiling also makes a space optically large and deeper. With the colours and their different combinations you can arrange optically the room according to your own wishes. At the choice of colours you must consider optical influence of colours to a space and influence of colours to our feelings.
