Mould – win in the battle with mould

A frequent problem in the flats is the appearance of mould on the wall, which extends also to wood, joints between the tiles etc. As from the aesthetic as well as health aspect mould is an undesired appearance we would like o get rid of it. Therefore we would like to tell you something about the mould and how to remove it.
For the growth of mould the following conditions must be fulfilled:

  • organic substances, such as sugar, cellulose, starch, albumin and fats may appear on the wall – also in the paint;
  • water, which is present in form of condensate or water vapour, if it is damp in the room;
  • oxygen;
  • moderate temperature.

These are optimal conditions for a relatively fast growth of mould, especially in kitchens, bathrooms, laundries, drying rooms in flats (babaker's shops, breweries.. etc.). A mould has a very characteristic growth in form of threads, they penetate into surface to plaster, they are formed by spores, which spread quickly with the help of air and form new places of infection. If infected places are simply painted with a paint coat., mould will develop further into plaster and to surface and cause damages of upper paint coat . film will crack, mould will come up to surface, black, brown spots will appear depending on type of mould. Besides aesthetics there is a harmful influence of mould to health. Spores, which float in the air may at breathing sum up in nose or penetrate into lungs. There is no evidence that spores could have a serious patogenic influence on a man, may cause health problems with sensitive people, who incline to allergies.

How to fight mould?

You can fight mould in two ways: first you have to remove and destroy existing mould and provide long-term protection of surfaces before the repeated attack. The best is to try to remove main reason for mould appearance in a flat: bad heat isolation – on cold surfaces condensate will be formed. You have to ventilate rooms, where there is a high concentrate of water vapour (cooking, bathing, , washing, drying etc.).

In Helios's programme under trademark SPEKTRA we offer the following solution:
For removal of present mould we recommend SPEKTRA biocide agent SANITOL, with which you spread the attacked spots. In case of intensive attack you use a non-thinned agent, if attack is mild you repeat it for a better effect. After the walls dry. Remove mould mechanically (never remove mould before sanation with SPEKTRA biocide agent SANITOL, as in this way you would scatter more spores and cause new attackts).

                                      SPEKTRA biocide agent SANITOL
                                              Biocidno sredstvo Sanitol

Then normal painting will follow with any wall paint. If you want a long-term protection we recommend you to use SPEKTRA wall paint for kitchens and bathrooms, which contains an agent, which slowly releases on the film surface and prevents growth of mould. This will provide protection against mould for some years, depending on conditions in the room. Paint is distinguished for pleasant odour,easy applicationn and a very good hiding power. Yet we recommend application of two coats so that antimicrobal protection will be more efficient. Otherwise paint is produced on water basis, minimal thinning with water is necessary, spots and tools will be washed with water. As the paint is high vapour permeable it enables exchange of water vapour through walls and keeps breathing of walls. At your wish you can tint it with liquid pigment pastes or other dispersion paints.

In the programme SPEKTRA we offer still one paint for long-term protection against mould, this is SPEKTRA antimicrobal paint, which is produced on basis of solvent, yet this is a solvent without odour, work with it is not unpleasant and rooms after painting are immediately suitable to reside. This paint is used for halls (for eating), you can also use it for flats. As its vapour permeability is slightly worse in comparison to the before mentioned SPEKTRA wall paint for kitchens and bathrooms it is more suitable for rooms, where this characteristic is not of essential importance. This paint is distinguished for washability, walls painted with it you can wash with water.

We achieve protection against mould with addition of SPEKTRA protection against mould which we can add in any water-based paint from the programme SPEKTRA. Litre of preparation you can mix well in approx. 15 litres of paint. In this way we can achieve in all paints, which are tinted on the system Heliomix the antimicrobal coat protection.
